If you want to celebrate Mardi Gras like they do in New Orleans, you must make a king cake. Traditionally, this bright purple, yellow and green cake hides a tiny plastic figurine inside the cake. When the dessert is sliced, the person who receives the hidden treat is the king or queen of the day. That’s some good old-fashioned fun if you ask us!


Its origins are subject to speculation. It has been proposed that it gets its name from either the South Side district of the city of Chicago, Illinois, or from the Southside Sportsmen's Club on Long Island. [1]

The drink may have been the preferred beverage of Al Capone, whose gang dominated Chicago's South Side. [2] The gin imported by Capone's rivals on the North Side of Chicago was smooth, and usually consumed with ginger ale. [2] However, the gin consumed by Al Capone's gang had a rougher finish, and required more sweeteners to make it palatable. [2] Thus the South Side was born. [2]

The following recipe for a South Side is used by the famed 21 Club in New York City. [3]

  • 10-12 mint leaves
  • 2 ounces gin
  • 3/4 ounces fresh-squeezed lemon juice
  • 3/4 ounces simple syrup

Combine all ingredients except mint into a cocktail shaker, fill shaker with ice, and shake well. Open the shaker and add the mint, leaving one mint leaf around the size of your thumb for garnish. Close the cocktail shaker and roll the mint leaves from one end of the shaker to the other so as to gently release the mint oils but not to bruise the leaves. Strain the glass into a highball glass and garnish with a mint leaf.

A South Side Fizz adds soda water: [4]

  • 1.25 oz gin
  • 1/2 oz lime juice
  • 1/2 oz simple syrup
  • 2 sprigs mint
  • club soda

In a shaker, combine the mint, lime juice, and simple syrup. Add the gin and fill with ice. Shake, and strain into a highball glass filled with crushed ice. Stir until frost appears on the outside of the glass. Fill with club soda and garnish with another dash of mint. [4]

There are many unique grilling techniques that come from the region as well, such as the famous Colombian dish lomo al trapo (an entire beef filet wrapped in a thick layer of salt and cloth and cooked in the coals). In the Patagonian chef Francis Mallman's cookbook called Seven Fires, he describes a total of seven distinct methods for cooking over a fire. South Americans have a true passion for this ancient way of cooking, something they are happy to share with the rest of the world.

30 Days of South Beach Diet

I'm not sure about you but I often loose track of resolutions in few months. Priorities change. Can't help. It is life. Isn't it? So from past few years, I decide to take life as it comes and make only short-term resolutions. (a month or 2 month kind).

My January's goal is to get diet back on track. Seriously, I'm going carb-free for January and following South Beach Diet Plan. I can't believe I have decided to make an open statement. If you are new to South Beach Diet? It is low-carb, low-sugar and high protein diet with lots of fresh food, lean protein and less refined/sugary stuff. Idea is to fill your plate with low carb and low-sugar foods instead of breads, noodles, or sweets. It is good way to cleanse body, get your strength back and loose weight while doing so.

Oh fairy tales, how they do give you that dream. That is what they are supposed to do, make you dream. At one point we do stop dreaming. Mostly it because too much disappointment because our dream did not come true. Or did it?

What place is this? It is called FatHeads. It is on the South Side of Pittsburgh on Carson Street, and they have some amazing combos on their sandwiches. So as I said a Pittsburgher living in Cleveland, but I do get a taste of my hometown from time to time here.

Trust me Clevelanders think one the best restaurants here, but 95% them do not even realize it from Pittsburgh and they are eating Pittsburgh style food. In fact, my friends ask me, after I told them that the original is in Pittsburgh, why is the best sandwich there called the South Side Slopes.

Well, the #7 best sandwich in the country, according to Maxim is called the South Side Slopes, because Fatheads is on the South Side and part of South Side starts to slope, so we call that part &ldquoThe Slopes,&rdquo thus the name South Side Slopes. Have you been to Pittsburgh? It a mountain with 3 rivers. It is all hills there. So this is my version of the &ldquoother&rdquo famous sandwich in Pittsburgh.
