This is the easiest ever chicken nugget recipe using crushed cornflakes as a coating. This recipe feeds my family of 10 making approximately 50 nuggets.

  • 1kg skinless chicken breast fillets
  • 4 eggs, beaten
  • 2 large bowls crushed cornflakes

  1. Preheat the oven to 200 C / Gas 6.
  2. Cut the chicken breast fillets to the size and shape you'd like your nuggets to be.
  3. Dip the chicken in the egg, and then dip in the crushed cornflakes making sure they're thoroughly coated. Place on a baking tray.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes until the chicken is no longer pink in the centre and the coating is golden and crispy. Remove from the oven and serve.


Serve with whatever you'd normally have with chicken nuggets. These are also great cold as a snack if you don't eat them all!

1 egg
1 cup water
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon MSG (Accent)
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
4 chicken breast fillets, each cut into 6-7 bite sized pieces
vegetable oil, for frying

Place the egg in a shallow bowl and beat it well. Stir in the water until blended.

In a plastic zip-top bag, combine the flour, salt, onion, powder, MSG, black pepper, and garlic powder. Shake to mix the ingredients.

Place the chicken breasts on a cutting board and pound to an even thickness (about 1/4-inch thick) with a meat mallet. Cut the chicken into bite-sized pieces and trim off any excess skin or fat.

Add the chicken pieces to the flour mixture and shake well to coat then shake off any excess flour. Remove the chicken to a paper towel.

When all the chicken pieces are coated in flour, individually dip them in the egg mixture to coat then let excess egg drip off them. Place them back in the bag with the flour. Repeat with remaining chicken pieces.

Shake the bag well to coat the chicken then place the bag - chicken and flour included - in the freezer for an hour. Place the egg mixture in the refrigerator, covered, while the chicken is chilling.

After the chicken has chilled, repeat the egg/flour process again to double coat them.

Meanwhile, heat oil in a skillet or deep fryer to 375 degrees F. When the chicken is ready, add the McNuggets to the oil in small batches (do not crowd the pieces) and deep fry until brown and crispy.

Remove the McNuggets from the oil and drain on brown paper bags (do not use paper towels or they will make them soggy). Repeat with remaining chicken pieces letting the oil come back up to temperature between batches if necessary.

I’m not even asking you to consider that mind-numbing feeling of joy that you will feel after whipping up this lip-smacking snack from scratch at home and being praised by everyone around (even though that is my own driving force)!

Making these chicken nuggets at home will definitely take more time than quickly frying frozen nuggets but if you trust me a little then you must be assured that your signature nuggets will be way more loved by you as well as everyone else who taste it! Hence, don’t think twice to give it a go!

Chicken breast is a popular choice as it cooks fast as well as is very lean, hence good for weight watchers. But I, being a sucker for taste, inclined to use chicken thigh meat which results in juicier nuggets.

Now the only difficulty I faced while using chicken thigh is the uneven shape & surface of thigh portion which makes it tricky to cut in perfect shape of nuggets.

Chicken breast is a very smooth and even portion and hence easy to cut into nugget-shaped pieces. So, you can make a choice depending on what you prefer – thigh meat would make slightly tastier nuggets as compared to breast meat whereas chicken breast is much easier & quicker to handle. Take your pick!

Now, talking about some more benefits of making chicken nuggets at home, I must make you aware that making anything at home will present you with uncountable opportunities of creation. You can make chicken nuggets of variety of flavors and the options are really countless.

I made a spicy version of chicken nuggets this time by adding chili powder which not only add heat but enhances the flavor of the chicken too. You can use any seasoning of your choice to marinate the chicken.

You can make these chicken nuggets even more skinny if you bake them instead of deep frying them. Just follow all the steps given below upto breading the chicken nuggets.

Then arrange them in single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake them in preheated oven at 180 C / 360 F for 20 minutes. Remove from oven and turn the pieces over. Bake for a further 15 minutes or until golden and the chicken is cooked through.

Your chicken nuggets will be as crispy as the fried version and equally juicy & succulent inside if you haven’t skipped the marination. You won’t lose any flavors of chicken nuggets if you bake them so, go ahead and crack up some delicious chicken nuggets at your own cozy kitchen and enjoy!

How to Make the Best Chicken Nuggets at Home

Unlike the restaurants and fast-food eateries, we bake these homemade chicken nuggets instead of frying them. They are easy to make, too!

The traditional way to make chicken nuggets is to bread them by following a three-part process. You would dredge in flour, then into egg, and finally, coat in breadcrumbs. This method makes great chicken nuggets, but we’ve found another way! It’s easy and tastes amazing.

Instead of using flour and breadcrumbs, we use potato chips. You can use any brand or flavor of potato chip you like (you can even use the baked varieties). We love how crunchy kettle cooked potato chips are, so we usually reach for those.

I especially love using dill pickle flavored chips, but that’s me. You can use whatever flavor you love. Think about barbecue, buffalo, salt and vinegar or even plain salt. Bonus: since we are using potato chips for these, they are gluten-free if you choose a gluten-free flavor!

To make these potato chip crusted chicken nuggets, we follow the following steps (a full recipe is below):

  • Cut boneless, skinless chicken into nugget-sized pieces. In our photos, we used chicken breast, but chicken thighs would be excellent.
  • Dip the chicken into a whisked egg. We use the whole egg, but for fewer calories, use egg whites.
  • Roll into crushed potato chips until well coated.
  • Place onto a baking sheet and bake until crispy.

I told you these chicken nuggets are simple. We love to serve them next to honey mustard dipping sauce, but ketchup or buffalo sauce work, too.

  • 350–400g/12–14oz chicken breast mini fillets or 2 chicken breasts cut into strips
  • 3 tbsp plain flour
  • 1 large free-range egg
  • 80g/2¾oz dried breadcrumbs, ideally panko or coarse dried breadcrumbs, or fresh breadcrumbs (see Recipe Tip below)
  • 4–6 tbsp oil
  • fine sea salt and ground black pepper

If you are oven-cooking the chicken, preheat the oven to 220C/200C Fan/Gas 7. If pan-frying, ignore this step.

Put the flour in a wide, shallow bowl. Season with salt and pepper and stir. Break the egg into a second shallow bowl and beat with a fork until smooth and pale. Tip half of the breadcrumbs into a third shallow bowl.

Coat each chicken strip first in flour, then egg, then breadcrumbs, pressing firmly and turning to coat on both sides. Set aside on baking paper.

If oven-cooking the chicken, brush a baking tray with 1 tablespoon of oil. Place the chicken pieces on the tray and brush generously but lightly with 3 tablespoons more oil. Bake for 15 minutes, turning halfway through.

If pan-frying the chicken, heat 3 tablespoons of oil in a large non-stick frying pan. Add half the chicken strips and fry over a medium heat for 2–3 minutes on each side, or until golden-brown, crisp and cooked throughout. Turn with tongs. Drain on a plate lined with kitchen paper and fry the remaining half with 3 more tablespoons of oil.

Recipe Tips

You can use fresh breadcrumbs to coat the chicken but the bread shouldn’t be too fresh. Two-day-old bread works well, or you can toast slices in a preheated oven at 180C/160C Fan/Gas 4 for 10–15 minutes, or until dry but not coloured. Cut off the crusts and blend into fairly coarse crumbs in a blender or food processor.

  • 1 cup pickle juice
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt

  • 1 1/2 cups plain or Italian breadcrumbs
  • Nonstick spray, for cooking
  • For easy honey mustard sauce
  • 1/2 cup Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 cup honey


Cut chicken breast into nugget-sized pieces, about 1-inch long and 1/2-inch thick. They should resemble more of a plank than a cube. In a bowl, add the nuggets and pickle and marinate for 30 minutes or up to an hour. Don’t marinate them for any longer or they will pickle.

In a medium bowl combine flour, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. In a second medium bowl, whisk eggs until smooth. In a third medium bowl, add the breadcrumbs.

Drain nuggets from the pickle juice and pat them dry with a few paper towels. No need to rinse them.

Working with a few nuggets at a time, add to flour mixture and coat well, followed by eggs letting any excess egg drip off, and finally fully coat in the breadcrumbs. You can start cooking one batch of nuggets while you work on breading the remainder of the nuggets.

Spray your air fryer basket and the nuggets with nonstick cooking spray. Lay out your first batch of chicken nuggets in a single layer with some space in between each nugget. Air fry at 350˚F for 6 minutes. Then, flip all the nuggets and fry for another 5-6 minutes.

Chicken nuggets are done when the breading is golden brown and they reach an internal temperature of at least 165˚F in the thickest part of the nugget. Repeat with all chicken nuggets until cooked.

In a small bowl combine the mustard and honey to make the honey mustard sauce. Serve the chicken nuggets while warm with sauce or your favorite dip.

Simple recipes with stock pantry ingredients are always a good idea, especially when you are short of time to make a family supper. Here is a little snack that’s easy to make and suitable for young and old.

Bonus: Do the preparation when you have a spare moment, freeze the nuggets and pull out to fry when you need a quick light meal.

I used to order chicken nuggets with every fast-food meal I would also buy and fry chicken nuggets as a snack all the time. Ever since I started making my own I don’t want to eat any other nuggets.

I make these nuggets every second week or so and my family absolutely loves it! I have passed this recipe to family and friends and they have all enjoyed it.
