‘MasterChef Junior’ winner Alexander Weiss was the first person ever to test out Ansel’s Cronut recipe

14 year-old MasterChef Alexander Weiss makes Cronuts with Dominique Ansel.

Alexander Weiss, the fourteen year-old winner of MasterChef Junior season one, became the first person ever to try out Dominique Ansel’s official Cronut recipe from Ansel’s new cookbook, Dominique Ansel: The Secret Recipes.

Ansel’s official recipe, which has been simplified for the home cook, still takes three days of preparation and involves the intricate process of creating laminated dough — alternating layers of dough and butter repeatedly — by hand.

Weiss is probably better equipped than most of us at home to test out the legendary recipe, and Ansel, who is there to supervise the process, reveals that he is himself a fan of the young chef and actually followed his arc on MasterChef Junior.

“I was surprised today by Alexander’s skills,” says Ansel. “I knew he was good at baking but I didn’t know he was that good. He learns very quickly.”

Dominique Ansel: The Secret Recipes is available for purchase now, and Ansel is currently on a cross-country tour to promote the book.

I have known these two since O&L days. They used to frequent their gigs, but I can’t remember how or exactly when we met. But I have a feeling it was during one of those crazy gig nights in Gweilos in Makati.

Photo grabbed from the couple’s Facebook account. Taken during Pen & Ink’s Babies In Black 2.

Rap has been telling me about his plan to propose to Kris and when I started to see photos of the proposal, I became the teary-eyed, happy and super emotional “ate” to these two.

Photo grabbed from Kris’ Facebook.

Two days before the wedding, Kris posted the photo above on her Facebook account with a caption that says “Boss Ralph proposed through a ‘Petition for change of civil status’ which I happily granted. Execution of judgment this saturday! #throwbackthursday”

Well-played, Rap! I love how the proposal was done in a way that it was related to what they have become — lawyers.

A month before the wedding, they came to see me to discuss their cake and cupcakes for their wedding. They also told me how much they wanted to have Clem aka Dragonfly Collector to sing on their big day. I laughed when they told me that in a way they were glad that the Dragonfly Collector tour was slightly moved later this year, making Clem available on their wedding day. They are super fans. I love it!

As for their cakes, they asked me to make a 2-tier red velvet cake and 2 kinds of cupcakes — red velvet and carrot. Production started 2 days before the wedding day and even if I feared I won’t finish everything on time, I did. But instead of a 2-tier wedding cake, I made it in to 3-tier which was a surprise for the couple.

The only instructions I got from them were the flavor of the cake and they wanted it to be simple. Based it on the wedding cake of another friend, Kath Cruz. I was pretty much given the freedom with the flower choices and how to execute their color motifs which drove me crazy, btw. What is celestial blue, anyways?

Some of the 200+ cupcakes I baked for the guests.

I had a dude-moment there. The only colors I know are the basics — no celestial in blues. Only dark, light/sky and maybe green. But with the help of my brother, Angelo, he guided me as I tried to achieve celestial blue. Thank God for his background in colors through his course in college which was multimedia arts. Seems that they dealt with that much colors, but I guess I need familiarize myself with these things, too. Like how I need to educate myself with new cartoon characters and that “Adventure Time” isn’t about hiking, scuba diving or wall climbing. That it is about Jake, Finn, Princess Bubblegum and the Ice King. But that is a different story to tell. Hahaha!

Dream come true to be serenaded by that guy from O&L.

Some couple dance to their favorite song but only a few gets to do that with a song especially written just for them. Clem and I have attended a few weddings together but this is the first time I witnessed him do this for a couple. I shed happy tears for these two while this happened.

Photobooth-ing with the Castros.

It is necessary for me to post the photobooth photo above because just like what I told Rap, “Ang cute ko kasi dito.” I rarely like how my photos turn out, so please, let me be. HAHAHA!

What I loved most about this wedding is how much these couple valued the presence of their guests. Keeping the program short and sweet. Even kept everyone entertained with a temporary tattoo station and a photobooth. They even got a taho and a dirty ice cream for everyone to enjoy. Did I mention the food was sooo good?! It was so good that up to this day, I can still remember how good it was and I think I don’t want to forget about it. Haha!

Of course, I didn’t pass up the opportunity to try out almost everything but the temporary tattoo. I still am a bit afraid to admit to myself that I think I want to get inked. Even if I promised myself that I am getting a tiny one after my stroke. To remind me that feeling pain is just as important as feeling ease and comfort.

A sweet note from the couple.

The night was ended with the couple’s SDE and a firework display. As we were about the leave, Kris handed me a paper bag with a note written just for me. These two are too kind, very generous and even showed their appreciation with their suppliers with gifts

The obligatory photo with the lovely couple.

Thank you Rap & Kris for making me a part of your union. You guys just don’t know how honored I am. Looking forward to seeing mini versions of you.

Food Serendipity

I have known these two since O&L days. They used to frequent their gigs, but I can’t remember how or exactly when we met. But I have a feeling it was during one of those crazy gig nights in Gweilos in Makati.

Photo grabbed from the couple’s Facebook account. Taken during Pen & Ink’s Babies In Black 2.

Rap has been telling me about his plan to propose to Kris and when I started to see photos of the proposal, I became the teary-eyed, happy and super emotional “ate” to these two.
