        Forbes: What are the reasons why Romania is at the bottom of the ranking of book consumption in the European Union? In other words, why aren't Romanians big buyers of books?
        
        Dan Vidrașcu: I think we need to look at things in their context. Statistics on crop consumption - in general - in Romania give us discouraging figures and it is true that, at the national level, on average, little money is spent on books.
        
        To answer your question strictly, I think the reason is mainly economic: the living standards of Romanians are quite low, and they invest their financial resources, primarily for basic needs.
        
        Then there are the reasons for the level of education and daily habits. The small number of bookstores and the very low marketing budgets of the publishing houses also have a significant impact on the size of the Romanian publishing market.
        
        Litera Publishing House publishes an average of 800 titles per year, with an average circulation of 3,000 copies / title. We try by all means - discounts, campaigns to encourage reading, campaigns to promote authors, etc. - to make these books find their readers.
        
        In the last two years we have noticed a significant increase in interest in children's books. More and more parents are more informed and eager to give their children books and reading moments at the expense of other entertainment, which is gratifying. If the little ones are encouraged to read, in addition to the educational benefits that will be obvious, I think that in a few years we will talk about completely different statistical figures regarding book consumption in Romania.
        
        Forbes: In 2018, what do you consider to have been the notable measures decided by the government with a significant impact (positive or negative) in the Romanian book market?
        
        Dan Vidrașcu: I could not say that the year 2018 was highlighted by any notable measure at the governmental level regarding the book market in Romania.
        
        It is true, in the last month of last year, the law was adopted declaring 2019 as the year of the book and which offers public institutions the framework for carrying out projects that could positively influence the book market. But in the absence of additional funding for these institutions and very clear methodological rules for law enforcement, the impact of this very good initiative will be limited.
        
        2018 will remain the year in which - through the measure taken in 2017 by MEN to offer the task of editing textbooks to a single publishing house, Didactics and Pedagogy - students learned from "unique" textbooks with low standards in all respects. This initiative has placed Romanian education at the edge of the European educational map, and its effects will probably be seen in years to come. We hope for a remedy for this situation, by resuming, even during this period, the tender system for the creation of students' textbooks.
        
        Unfortunately, in Romania we cannot talk about government policies in support of publishers, there are no special, reduced fees for the transport of books through the national postal service (as happens in other countries).
        
        Therefore, affordable books, reading promotion campaigns, equipping libraries with new books, special programs for teachers to purchase books, all these and many other aspects that give "cultural health" to a society remain needs that will be met. through the efforts of private companies and not through coherent policies adopted by the government at the national level.
        
        Forbes: Has the migration of Romanians hit the labor market in the publishing field? In other words, have you been facing a labor crisis in your field in recent years? How do you handle this crisis?
        
        Dan Vidrașcu: There are many aspects that, in the 30 years of existence, have led to today's success of the Litera brand: good selection of titles, a coherent editorial policy, which has tried to cover all areas of interest, innovative marketing and sales techniques , campaigns to encourage reading, etc. All this development was possible through the people who build the Litera team, there is a nucleus of people with 10-15 years of experience in publishing.
        
        At the same time, when we want to develop a collection or an imprint and we need to hire specialists - editors, technical editors, proofreaders - it is not easy for us to find them.I would not know how to quantify, but probably the migration of Romanians has reached the editorial field: students of Letters - from among whom are trained publishing specialists, prefer professions that bring them more money or prefer to seek professional fulfillment in other lands .
        
        Forbes: What are the business opportunities for your publishing house represented by the two domestic book fairs, Gaudeamus and Bookfest, but also those offered by participating in international fairs?
        
        Dan Vidrașcu: Bookfest and Gaudeamus book fairs are opportunities for us to exhibit much of Litera's offer, to organize launches or other events in which to meet with our readers. The money we invest in renting, arranging and organizing the stands is, in general, at the same level as the ones we make from the sale of books, at the end of the five days of the fair.
